Common Dog Care Mistakes

Dogs have been our friends and companions for thousands of years. Fido certainly brings a lot of joy to our lives. However, our furry friends do need good care in order to thrive. It’s easier than you may think to overlook some of your pet’s needs. Here, a Glendale, AZ vet lists some common dog care mistakes.

Lack of Exercise

Just like people, dogs need proper activity to stay healthy. While all pups have their own unique exercise needs, so ask your vet to recommend a suitable workout regimen for your pooch. That said, most dogs need at least a daily walk. Otherwise, Fido may have a lot of pent-up energy. This can lead to a lot of doggy mischief, like chewing and digging.

Fido is a pack animal by nature, and often gets lonely when he’s left by himself. Of course, you may have no choice but to leave your pooch home while you go to work, be sure to spend lots of time with him when you get back.

Dogs are many things: cute, lovable, playful, loyal, and loving are a few words that come to mind. Frisky is another one. However, you should never punish your pooch for misbehaving. Fido really doesn’t understand punishment, so this may make him feel scared or anxious.

Poor Grooming

Your canine pal may be less than thrilled to realize he’s about to get a bath, but don’t let that adorable sad look guilt you into skipping this. In addition to regular baths and brushings, you’ll also need to keep up with your pup’s pedicures and dental care needs.

Lack of Veterinary Care

Pets need regular veterinary care to stay healthy. Fido should be fixed, and kept current on his vaccines, exams, and parasite control. You’ll also want to contact your vet immediately if you notice anything that could be a sign of illness.

Improper Training

Don’t underestimate the importance of good training. Teaching Fido simple commands like Stay and Come can stop him from running off or approaching dangerous areas!

Lack of ID

We recommend that all dogs be microchipped. Fido will still need to wear ID tags, though. If he is ever lost, this is the easiest way for someone to connect him to you.
