6 Easy Ways to Keep Your Cat Cool in Hot Weather

Are you enjoying summer? Or are you already anxious for cooler weather? Summers in Arizona can be brutally hot, to put it mildly. Heat can be very difficult for our feline friends. Kitties can’t easily cool themselves down if they overheat. Plus, Fluffy is already wearing a fur coat! Here, a Glendale, AZ vet offers some advice on keeping your cat cool.

Climate Control

The best way to help Fluffy beat the heat is to keep her indoors, in rooms cooled by fans and/or air conditioners. Your feline friend will also be safer inside, where she is protected from cars, weather, predators, and other hazards.

Raised Bed

Raised bed, like hammocks, tend to stay cooler than regular beds, because air can move beneath them. You can make Fluffy a little kitty hammock in just a few minutes. All you need is an end table or coffee table with four legs, and a piece of material. Cut the material so that it is the same shape as the table top, but smaller, and then attach the corners to the table legs.

Ice Cube Hockey

Did you know that cats only sweat through their paw pads? Batting an ice cube around is a great way for Fluffy to cool off! Drop an ice cube onto the floor in front of your furball on hot days, and see if she goes for it. While you’re at it, put one in her water dish as well.

Cats are very good about keeping themselves clean, but that doesn’t mean Fluffy can’t use a helping hand now and then. Brushing your kitty regularly will remove dead fur and dander from her coat, which will help her stay cooler. This is also a great way to bond with your pet!

Kitty Fountain

Keeping your cat hydrated is very important! Many kitties actually prefer drinking running water. Get Fluffy a pet fountain or an automated water dispenser.

Let Fluffy Wander

As you may have noticed, cats are very, very good at making themselves comfortable. Fluffy will instinctively seek out the coolest spots. Don’t be surprised if you find her sprawled out on the kitchen or bathroom tile: these spots tend to stay cool.
