Pet Fire Safety Day

Did you know that today, July 15th, is Pet Fire Safety Day? As the saying says, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is definitely the case when it comes to both fires and pet care! This is a great time to talk about fire safety and fire prevention for pets. A local North Phoenix, AZ vet discusses pet fire safety below.

Make sure your pet is microchipped, and is wearing proper ID tags. That way, if something happens and your pet runs away in the commotion, your furry buddy will have your contact information. We also recommend putting together a pet emergency kit. The kit should contain a week’s worth of your pet’s food, treats, and medicine; bedding; dishes; copies of your pet’s photos and paperwork; a leash and collar; and a first aid kit. Keep this in a storage tote near your pet’s carrier. That way, if you have to evacuate due to a nearby fire, you’ll have everything you need for your pet in one place.

Firefighters often do everything they can to save pets when there is a fire. We recommend getting pet window stickers for your home, as these can be very helpful. If your animal companion is often home alone during the day, keep a collar on your furry pal to make it easier for firefighters to catch him or her. If you are concerned that your pet could get caught on something, ask your vet for advice on using breakaway collars. It’s also important to have an evacuation plan that includes your beloved pet.

Fire Prevention

Every year, pets start as many as a thousand fires. We truly hope none of our clients are ever included in these statistics! That said, there are some things you can do to reduce the chances of this happening in your home. First and foremost, be very careful when burning candles. Only place them in secure, high places that your pet can’t reach. Also, if you have a gas stove and a medium or large dog, put child-proof covers on the burners, so Fido can’t accidentally turn them on.
