Your canine buddy is a loyal and loving companion, who is there for you through thick and thin, offering unconditional love and loyalty, tail wags, and doggy kisses. You of course want to do everything in your power to keep your canine buddy happy, healthy, and safe. Below, your North Phoenix vet offers some tips on being a great dog owner.
Proper ID
Make sure your dog has a collar and an ID tag with your contact information. Microchipping is also very important. If Fido is ever lost or stolen, a microchip greatly improves the odds of him coming home.
Veterinary Care
Keep your pooch up to date on vaccines and heartworm prevention. There’s also a chance that your vet could discover a health issue during Fido’s examination. When it comes to treating pets, early detection is very beneficial. Regular dental cleanings are a must as well, as poor oral health can lead to many other health issues in dogs. Make sure your pup is examined at least annually!
Leash Your Pooch
Even if your furry friend is extremely well-behaved, he could always get spooked at something and bolt, or take off after a squirrel or another animal. Don’t take Fido off your property without a leash!
Proper Diet
Feeding Fido a good, high-quality diet will make a huge difference in his health. Get your pooch the highest-quality food you can afford.
Spay or Neuter
Dogs that have been fixed generally have fewer behavioral issues and are less aggressive. They’re also healthier, and tend to live longer.
Exercise
Fido will be healthier, calmer, and less prone to behavioral issues if he’s getting proper exercise. Walk your canine buddy daily!
Training
Every dog should know at least the five basic commands, which are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Giving Fido some basic training is very important for both behavioral and safety reasons!
Companionship
Dogs are pack animals by nature, and often get depressed and anxious if left alone too long. Don’t let your pooch spend too much time by himself!
Play
Playing is great for Fido, as it will help him burn off excess energy, entertain him, and make him happy all at once! It’s great stress relief for you as well!
